Vaasthu shilpa shaastra, the ancient mystic science and art of designing and constructing buildings which is a part of Yajur-veda, one of the four vedas. The term civilization is by itself a generalized connotation of that and vaastukala a part of it. According to historians, Ferguson, Havell and Cunningham, this science dates back to 6000 BC- 3000 BC.It is an art of coordinating our life with five basic and essential elements or panchabhoothas and they are

1) Aakaasha - Space
2) Vaayu       -
3) Agni          - Fire
4) Jala           -
5) Bhoomi     -

There is an invisible and constant relation between these elements outside and those within an individual and in his living and working places. Man can improve his conditions by properly designing his buildings by understanding the effectiveness of these five natural forces. The location, direction and disposition of buildings have a direct bearing on life of the inmates and Vaasthu shilpa shaastra, the ancient scripture, experienced by generations after generations contains the essence of these knowledge.

Vaasthu purusha mandala : The image of Vaasthu purusha, one with mandala is drawn in the likeness of man.His head lies in the North-East in the mandala, the legs in South-West, right hand in the North-west, left hand in South -East. Body of Vaasthupurusha is constituted by forty five gods or deities. position of the each of the deity is fixed in the plan. when these are scrupously followed proper ventilation and good disposition to Sun and privacy is ensured.

We have given some general guidelines for construction of residential buildings which may be referred to get rough idea of your building. A thorough study is required to prepare the plan of the building as per vaasthu without any defects.

Generally Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter are called as good planets which creates merits to human beings. Hence in order to store more good cosmic rays in north and eastern portions it must downed with more vacant spaces. Hence water sources must be placed in these portions only in order to store more good cosmic rays because water as a media can able to store more cosmic rays and by the by it can able to emit again towards the structure permanently.

The north west direction belongs to Lord moon and north direction belongs to Lord mercury and north east direction belongs to Lord Jupiter and east direction belongs to Lord sun and south east direction belongs to Lord Venus as per the theory of Palm leaves of Sre kagabujandar.

Vaasthu Saasthra tells as the south and west directions of a site must be high in reduce level comparing other two directions. By the by less vacant spaces will be left in south and west directions around the built up structure.

Generally Saturn, Raghu and Mars called as non good planets which creates mostly demerits to human beings.

Hence in order to avoid the storage of non good cosmic rays in the south and western portions these portions must be upped in reduce level with less vacant spaces. The west direction belongs to Lord Saturn, the south west direction belongs to Lord Raghu and the Lord Mars belongs to Southern direction as per the theory of Palm leaves of Sre kagabujandar

Blend of Vaasthu

Vaasthu deals with elemental forces that underlie all things. From all this we can only conclude that cosmic patterns and mathematical grids do underlie disciplines as varied as music, architecture and dance. The world over ancient traditions adheres to these magical, energized principles, though, in today's rationalized thinking we have far removed ourselves from these beliefs. Our homes and workspaces reflect a growing need to combine functionality with an individual sense of style. We are able to take several global cultural influences and fit them into our environment to suit our needs, rhythms of living and our climatic imperatives. Whether the choice is to have a home with muttramhum and a thinnai or a colonial house we blend together a harmony of spatial interrelations. We look for a flow of energy and form. The colors of Indian textiles and finish of old wood, the warmth of terracotta and the sheen of bronze give an organic sense of continuity with the past. Harmony and energized equilibrium in our living spaces only indicate that we have intuitively invested them with the lines and rhythms and life giving positive forces of ancient architectural and metaphysical paradigms. These forces enter our lives indirectly and give us a sense of equilibrium and well being.

More open space should be left in North side of the plot and less space in the South.

Simalarly more open space should be left in the East than West side of the plot.

The height or level of the building should be less in North and East.

On a multi-storeyed building, terrace should be left towards North or East, not towards South or West.

Balconies should be towards East or North.

More window openings should be towards East and North.

Less window openings should be towards West and South.

Thicker walls should be  builts on West  and South side.

Thinner walls should be built on East and North Side.

Doors and Openings should be more towards North and East side.

Doors should be less in number towards West or South.

For South road facing house, the gate should be on South orSouth-East and not on the South-West.

For a West road facing house,  the gate should be in West or North-West and not in the South-West.

The South-West room should be the master bed room.
